I need to be able to detect the presence (not level) of DC current over a range of 5A to 75A with surges of up to 300A. I am having trouble finding a burden resistor that will allow enough voltage to detect the low range and stay under the Vmax rating of the part. The max is an RMS value, so how does this play in for DC? Any other suggestions are welcome.

    Dear Sir,

Using an AC Current Transformer to monitor DC Current is not possible. The current transformer requires the AC current to excite the core and windings to produce an output. DC current has a flat sine wave so the core and windings do not get excited thus no output from the CT.

In order to detect DC current you have to use a device with Hall Effect Technology or Magnetic Modular Technology. Some of our products are the CR5200 Series and CR5395 Relay. I have attached the catalog pages for your review.
